What Exactly Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

April 4, 2022

When you hear the term “pelvic floor physiotherapy”, you’re probably raising your eyebrows, wondering what that could even be. Often people who do not have pelvic floor dysfunction are intrigued by what a pelvic floor therapist does, and those who are having problems often suffer in silence.

If you have questions, read on. The specialists at Healing Haven Physiotherapy have put together a helpful guide to explain pelvic floor physiotherapy.

What Is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physiotherapy that works to treat pelvic floor muscles that are too tense or weakened. This is a great treatment that targets any type of pelvic floor dysfunction.

You may be asking, “what is pelvic floor dysfunction?” When someone is suffering from dysfunction in their pelvic floor, they are unable to correctly coordinate or relax their pelvic floor muscles.

Many pelvic floor disorders can arise from this, such as:

  • Urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and urge incontinence

  • Urinary urgency, hesitation, frequency, and retention

  • Pain with bowel movements or urination

  • Pelvic organs prolapse

  • Painful intercourse

  • Constipation

  • Pain in the areas of the vagina

  • Endometriosis

  • Prenatal/Postpartum care

  • Hip pain

  • Lower back pain

  • Chronic pelvic pain

When Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Recommended?

At Healing Haven Physiotherapy, we recommend you visit a physiotherapy clinic to assess your pelvic floor dysfunction. You may benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy if you think you have any type of pelvic floor dysfunction.

We don’t want you to continue to experience the painful symptoms associated with pelvic floor dysfunction . The good news is that there is hope. You can start to feel better with pelvic floor physiotherapy.

You can treat your pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms with a personalized treatment plan.

How Does Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Work?

Before we can begin the process of pelvic floor physiotherapy, we will go through an intake package. This is a comprehensive questionnaire that is completed before your assessment and your therapist will review it upon your visit.

This assessment can last anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour. Your therapist will take a detailed history and understand your symptoms before curating a treatment plan with you. The next part of the assessment is a physical exam, which includes an external and internal examination.

Once you’ve gone through the comprehensive assessment process, you will begin a treatment plan with your therapist. Each pelvic floor physiotherapy treatment can range somewhere between 30 to 45 minutes.

Usually, each treatment will involve an internal component. Your therapist will either focus on strengthening weak or lengthened muscles or reducing spasms in tight and shortened muscles. This is dependent on your pelvic floor dysfunction.

Contact Us Today

If you notice you’re having any problems with your pelvic floor, it’s best to book an appointment at our clinic. Unlike other muscle strains or injuries that can sometimes resolve on their own, pelvic dysfunction tends to worsen as time passes.

It is much easier to correct mild incontinence or a minor prolapse versus correcting a problem that has been progressing over multiple years. It is also simpler to address persistent pelvic pain early on, rather than waiting for the problem to worsen over time.

If you have any further questions on pelvic floor physiotherapy do not hesitate to call us at (587) 735-6272! We offer phone consultations with a registered pelvic floor physiotherapist to discuss your issues and provide honest advice about your treatment options. You can also contact us online at your convenience.
